Spin period change and the magnetic fields of neutron stars in Be X-ray binaries in the SMC

چکیده
We report on the long term average spin period, rate of change of spin period and X-ray luminosity during outbursts for 42 Be X-ray binary systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We also collect and calculate parameters of each system and use this data to determine that all systems contain a neutron star which is accreting via a disc, rather than a wind, and that if these neutron stars are near spin equilibrium, then over half of them, including all with spin periods over about 100 seconds, have magnetic fields over the quantum critical level of 4.4×10 G. If these neutron stars are not close to spin equilibrium, then their magnetic fields are inferred to be much lower, on the order of 10-10 G, comparable to the fields of neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries. Both results are unexpected and have implications for the rate of magnetic field decay and the isolated neutron star population.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملA Model for Twin Kilohertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binaries
We suggest a plausible interpretation for the twin kiloHertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. We identify the upper kHz QPO frequencies to be the rotational frequency and the lower kHz QPOs the standing kink modes of loop oscillations at the inner edge of the accretion disk, respectively. Taking into account the interaction between the neutron star...
متن کاملMagnetar in a Young Low Mass Binary System?
We suggest that the unique X-ray source 1E161348-5055 at the centre of the supernova remnant RCW 103 consists of a neutron star in close orbit with a low mass main sequence star. The time signature of 6.67 hr is interpreted as the neutron star’s spin period. This requires the neutron star to be endowed with a high surface magnetic field of ∼ 10 G. Magnetic or/and material (propeller) torques ar...
متن کاملCan the anomalous X-ray pulsars be powered by accretion?
The nature of the 5 − 12 s “anomalous” X-ray pulsars (AXPs) remains a mystery. Among the models that have been proposed to explain the properties of AXPs, the most likely ones are: (1) isolated accreting neutron stars evolved from the Thorne-Żytkow objects (TŻOs ) due to complete spiral-in during the common envelope (CE) evolution of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), and (2) magnetars, which ar...
متن کاملThe Neutron Stars of Soft X–Ray Transients
Soft X–ray Transients (SXRTs) have long been suspected to contain old, weakly magnetic neutron stars that have been spun up by accretion torques. After reviewing their observational properties, we analyse the different regimes that likely characterise the neutron stars in these systems across the very large range of mass inflow rates, from the peak of the outbursts to the quiescent emission. Wh...
